Happy Monday everyone!
‘Giraffe’s Can’t Dance’ is an all time favourite book in our Heddon-on-the-Wall nursery and it has a very important moral behind the story. Gerald the giraffe’s long thing legs and crooked knees make walking pretty hard. Luckily for him he meets a wise cricket who teaches him how to dance to his own unique tune.
The book really effectively provides the children with the opportunity to learn and talk about their similarities, differences and any challenges that they have already faced or may face in the future. Understanding and respecting other people’s differences is a very important lesson to learn from a young age. Books like this one give the children an opportunity to be open and discuss their worries and how they impact upon their mental health along with others around them.
After reading the story the children discussed how Gerald might have felt when his friends were being unkind to him. This made the children aware of how their words and actions can effect others and just how important it is to be kind and caring towards everyone around them.
A few other books that go down well are ‘My Monster and Me’, ‘The Worrysaurus’ and ‘Happy to be Me’ if anyone is looking for some inspiration for bedtime stories!
Lots of love,
Leigh x
