Leigh’s Post Office!

The children enjoyed a role play Post Office activity. They did some mark making using crayons and paper creating ‘letters’. This provided lots of opportunity for role play which helps children’s imaginations to develop. They enjoyed talking about who their letters were for, often naming members of their family, siblings and friends. They talked about what they were writing or drawing about in their letters and often mentioned their favourite animals or colours. Having conversations with the children where they are able to join in allows them to feel valued and understand more about our differences and similarities.

They practiced peeling stickers off and sticking them onto their letters to represent stamps. This helped the children develop their fine motor skills. We talked about the numbers on the stamps, focusing on number recognition and also how we need stamps before we can post a letter, widening the children’s understanding of the world around them. We finished the activity by posting the finished letters through the post box using hand-eye coordination and gross motor skills. We then imagined we worked inside the post office and began using a rubber stamp dipped in paint to mark the letters. We sorted the letters into two piles, one for blue 1st class stamps and one for red 2nd class stamps, this encouraged the children to think about colour and to group things together accordingly. The children really enjoyed learning about the different elements that come under this job role, helping them widen their understanding of the world around them.
