Teachable Moments!

05.09.2022

Within the classroom it is important for a practitioner to not become to involved with childrens play as they learn so much through curiosity and independence. However, there comes a time when we as practitioners can involve ourselves within their play and offer a range of teachable moments, for instance the children love to draw and write, however sometimes require a little support with their grasp and fine motor skills in which to form letters correctly.
To support this, using small natural materials like sand and rice can help children gain more control with their fine motor and develops their hand and eye coordination. Following the children’s own interests and learning, we can observe until a teachable moment presents itself. In this case a letter is perfectly formed using a finger however is a mirrored effect therfore an opportunity for the practitioner to guide and scaffold the right way to write a letter and encourage this learning through interest and curiosity.
A teachable moment is an unplanned opportunity that arises in the classroom where a teacher has a chance to offer insight to his or her children. A teachable moment is not something that you can plan for; rather, it is a fleeting opportunity that must be sensed and seized by the teacher.
Lots of love,
Leigh and the team xx
