The Colour Monster!

This week, the Sunflowers have been exploring a new story called the Colour Monster which discusses feelings and emotions that we all may feel to help promote their personal, social and emotional development. The Sunflowers have enjoyed getting to know the Colour Monster which has helped them separate and identify how they’re feeling and have all been able to memorise what each colour stands for.

Today we used this story to make a feelings pie – the children sat down to discuss how they were feeling and added a layer to their pie depending on how each child felt independently. This has also prompted the children to give reasons as to why they feel that way by using extended and complex sentences. Once finishing their pies and giving their reasons, the children sat down to compare the different layers they had added and noticed some similarities between their feelings – this helped the children recognise the feelings of others and take them into consideration as well.

This has also opened a discussion about starting big school in the summer and how the children are currently feeling about this exciting and new adventure. The story this week has definitely helped the children recognise their own feelings more confidently and has encouraged them to share how they’re feeling between their friends and adults across nursery, sometimes using the colours of the monsters to explain how they’re feeling and why. Ultimately, the Sunflowers have thoroughly enjoyed exploring this new story which has helped them recognise and discuss their own feelings, consider the feelings of others and expand on reasons why they feel this way.
