Top Tips To Support Your Child With Speech!

02.10.2023

We often get asked “What can I do to help support my child’s speech development?”
Top tips for you to do at home!
Model back the correct sounding word for example if the child is trying to say ‘train but saying “tain” you say “train”.
Provide a running commentary on what your child is doing. This helps children to understand the meaning of language in everyday life.
Extend your child’s sentence. If your child says ‘dog’ the adults say ‘big dog’.
Give your child choices.
Create opportunities to hold two objects at snack time e.g. do you want some apple or a breadstick? This will encourage your child to communicate.
Model back your child’s choice and give them the item.
Create situations for your child. This could be putting toys and snacks out of your child’s reach and will encourage them to initiate interaction with you to ask for help.
Encourage songs and rhymes with lots of singing and dancing as this helps support listening and attention skills.
Use gestures – this can help support your child to understand expression.
AND finally to the best part… PLAY TIME! Always be a part of their play and engage in lots of interaction.
We hope this helps and please let us know if you have any handy tips or games that you enjoy with your child.
Lots of love,
Leigh and the team xxx
