Why Building Blocks Are Important for Child Development!

26.02.2024

Here at Leigh’s Nurseries we are passionate about creating environments full of resources that create awe and wonder for every child. You will find different building blocks and building materials throughout our environments both indoor and outside. Building blocks can enhance children’s problem-solving abilities, mathematics skills, and language and literacy abilities in their early years brilliantly.
In the construction area play often relies heavily on the use of wooden blocks and bricks. Children are given the opportunity to role play and use their imagination to explore different scenarios. Children can gain so much self-esteem and confidence from role play opportunities. We use blocks to support a child’s mathematic development, to count, group and learn sizing such as small, medium and large. In our environments we have coloured blocks for children to have visual sensory experiences. Below is a list of just some of the areas of development incorporating blocks into play can assist:
– Fine motor skills
– Hand-eye coordination
– Spatial awareness
– Cognitive flexibility
– Language skills
– Creativity
– Problem solving
– Critical thinking
– Social competence
Lots of love,
Leigh and the team xxx
