Mental Health Matters!

Here at Leigh’s we believe it’s important to promote child friendly discussion surrounding mental health. As it’s mental health awareness month, the Sunflowers have been learning about how to manage our emotions, be positive and how to uplift our friends.

During our water transferring activity, the children first had to sort the labelled beakers into ‘happy feelings’ and ‘sad feelings.’ We then made a recipe for ‘what makes us feel sad’, pouring the different negative emotions and situations such as ‘anger’ and ‘mean words’ into the empty container labelled ‘me’.

They then used their problem solving skills to figure out how to make themselves feel better, working out that we could remove the negative emotions using the empty  jars of positive strategies, such as ‘talking to a grown up about your feelings’. This activity prompted discussion surrounding why and when we feel certain emotions, positive coping strategies of things that make us happy, and taught the children what mental health means.
